New 149t Grove RT

4. June 2018 | Comments (0)

Manitowoc has unveiled the 149 tonne Grove GRT 9165 Rough Terrain crane at its open days in Shady Grove Pennsylvania today.

The three axle GRT 9165 features a 62.5 metre six section, pinned main boom which can be extended to a maximum tip height of 91.2 metres with a choice of manual or hydraulic offset extensions.

The new crane has been designed for easy transport, with an overall stowed height of 3.8 metres, hydraulically removable counterweight and outrigger boxes, taking it down to an overall weight of 52.6 tonnes. The crane uses a hydrogas suspension system.

The updated cab features a new ‘wide body design’, 250mm wider than its other Rough Terrain models, and tilts by up to 20 degrees. The control system includes an optimised display screen for its Crane Control System (CCS).

Product manager Rough Terrain cranes Paul Cutchall said: “The GRT9165 continues our trend of offering class-leading advantages on large capacity cranes. The crane’s longer reach in particular will help lifters to bid for and complete more jobs with a single crane, increasing their capabilities.”

“Rough Terrain cranes are often the first machine to roll onto the job site, so they have to be reliable. That’s why we designed the GRT9165 to be the strongest, longest reaching, most cost effective Rough Terrain crane we have ever assembled.”

Vertikal Comment

This is the first three axle Grove Rough Terrain crane and will look to go head to head with the Tadano 145 tonne Tadano GR-1600XL-2 and Link-Belt RTC-80160 Series II Rough Terrains.

On the surface the new model has all of the key features of those two cranes, with a little more nominal capacity, a slightly longer main boom, significantly longer boom extensions and all in the same dimensional package. We plan to run a comparison in the next Cranes & Access magazine.

The new crane will almost certainly raise interest in what is a niche part of the market, which is likely to help expand the market.
