Fatal 'lift' incident

A man died from crush injuries sustained while reportedly using a "scissor lift" at an industrial site in Carole Park, on the south side of Brisbane, Australia on Saturday.

Reports are still a little sketchy, in that while clear that the man, 63, died after he was crushed against the ceiling of the facility it also suggests that the lift was part of a machine used to pick and sort timber and not a scissor lift as reported. The man was an employee of James Hardy Asia Pacific at its new fibre cement manufacturing plant.

A spokesperson for Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said: "In the early hours of this morning a man sustained serious cranial crushing after an incident involving a scissor lift device. Workplace Health and Safety is investigating the incident and we have an investigator, an engineer and an inspector on site."

UPDATE

As we suspected this incident did not involve a scissor lift, we now have confirmation from Workplace Health and Safety to that effect, in spite of its initial announcement. What is not clear is how the man was lifted to the ceiling on a piece of fixed equipment. We will update as we learn more.
