ALE launches new widening trailer in the UK

UK-based heavy lift and transport company ALE has announced plans to invest in a range of widening trailers that can be widened to 4.3 metres when loaded. The trailers have been jointly developed with German trailer manufacturer Goldhofer with ALE agreeing an exclusive agreement for several years.

One of the main advantages of extending the axle beam width by 30 percent - from 3.6 metres to 4.3 metres - and extending the axle spacing 10 percent - from 1,500mm to 1,650mm - is the lower imposed ground pressure. This means the load is distributed more effectively allowing the trailer to be able to achieve route clearance on certain weight restricted structures compared to other trailers.

Capacity per axle is between 26.1 tonnes and 30 tonnes with the 965mm axle beam (30 percent more than the industry standard). Steering angle is +/- 55 degrees with drive height of 1,285mm and a lifting suspension stroke of 600mm.

With more direct routes available, less time is spent on public roads resulting in reduced congestion and disruption.

The new trailers are also expected to be a more favourable solution for bridge owners and local authorities with less stress on the bridge and bearings. The ability to widen when carrying the load also minimises street furniture removal.

ALE has purchased 50 of the new axle lines to be used for road transportation projects across the UK. The trailers will also expand its current fleet of widening trailers already based in Australia and South Africa.

“We wanted to update our existing fleet of trailers in the UK and took the opportunity to capture additional benefits,” said Darren Adams, director UK. “There was nothing on the market so we approached Goldhofer with a technical solution for a trailer that could be widened when loaded and they created an innovative solution that matched out requirements.”

The trailer has a lifting suspension stroke of 600mm.

ALE held and open day to launch its new widening trailer at Sandon Hall, Staffordshire


The trailers were launched yesterday at an open day near its UK headquarters at Sandon Hall, Staffordshire which also featured its Trojan truck, Mega Jack system and latest 60 tonnes per axle capacity Scheuerle Self Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs).
