Konecranes upside down RTG

Finnish lifting equipment specialist Konecranes has launched a new rubber-tyred gantry crane, the Boxhunter.

The 40.6 tonne capacity Boxhunter has a one over five configuration and can stack up to seven-plus-one containers wide. Unlike traditional rubber-tyred gantry cranes with the drives, hoists and operators cab mounted at the top of the crane, the Boxhunter’s is located at the base of the crane in order to provide better visibility when driving and easier access for service and maintenance. It uses advanced video and laser scanning technology to maximise visibility when lifting.

The crane also has a new counterweight system, similar in design to systems used in elevators, eliminating the weight of the spreader, cutting the total load by 25 percent. Diesel powered it is also available with cable reel or busbar electrical power feeds.

Features include the company’s Automated Stacking Cranes (ASCs) system and video cameras located at strategic points around the crane combined with a graphical user interface in the cab which provides excellent visibility. Additional options include Lonecrane’s DGPS Autosteering, Container Positioning System and its remote diagnostics and technical support service Truconnect.

Konecranes/ Port Cranes director of technology Hannu Oja, said: “We focused on the operator and the graphical user interface that we provide the operator with. The idea that we hit on was to turn things on their head, literally, and bring the operator down to ground level. With today’s sophisticated video and laser technology it’s no longer essential to have the cab at the top of the crane. While bringing the cab down, we also relocated the hoisting machinery down to ground level. This simplifies the overall structure and brings a new ease of access to this machinery, which is great from the service perspective.”
