Wet cold and windy Bauma China

Bauma China opened to its usual chaotic first day to day, in spite of very wet and cold weather. The show looked distinctly smaller than prior years – in the outside crane and access areas, with smaller less exuberant stands and a lot fewer concept machines and extravagant prototypes.

The one very noticeable trend is that aerial work platforms have come of age big time with all the crane makers and many other construction equipment suppliers all diving in and in many cases showing full product ranges. The most notable among them was government owned XCMG with booms lifts up to 98ft and a full line of electric scissor lifts.

First of all while there were plenty of copycat machines at the show- as usual - and most locally built scissors look like GenieS, this habit is becoming rarer - with plenty of true innovation on display this year

Another trend was the increased interest in telehandlers with several models on show, including Manitou, Genie, JLG, a couple of local suppliers and, three Magni, including two sold to the Chinese army and Haulotte which has sold its first unit in the country.

Dingli attracted most attention with its new Magni designed Italian boom lifts. But XCMG, while taking a more conventional line with its all new full line of boom and scissor lifts had some interesting looking products - all painted gold. Haulotte unveiled an all new 28 metre model the HT28RTO and HT28RT PRO, while the telescopic jib has gone, the new model introduces many new features including Activ Lighting - more on all of thrse new models in the next Cranes & Access. Another surprise was the Potain MCH 120 hydrualic luffing jib crane, due to be built in China first and available late next year.

The following is just a glimpse from what was a dreary miserable day in terms of weather. Sadly tomorrow is expected to get worse, but Thursday might be brighter.
