New hybrid boom from Genie

As we predicted in the Vertikal Bauma guide, Genie will preview a new hybrid articulating boom - the 45ft Z-45 FE - at Bauma next week in Munich, Germany.

Although details are scarce at this point, it will in principle be a smaller version of the 60ft Z-60 FE, with the same concept and similar operating systems, while its structural elements are likely to be based on the standard Z-45/25J, with 6.9 metres of outreach at an up & over height of 7.5 metres, while platform capacity is 300kg.

As such it will have four AC wheel motors and oscillating axle, with an additional Stage V/Tier 5 diesel powered generator to top up/recharge the battery pack or boost performance. The Z45 FE has two modes of operation full electric - which can handle a full shift on a single charge - or Hybrid which combines the two and can run for a week on a single tank of diesel.

The new model will be manufactured in Umbertide, Italy and available globally in early 2020. More details will be added next week.

Vertikal Comment

We except to learn of at least one more model in this series next week, along with information on lithium ion battery back options for the new models.
Expect to see a similar, yet different line up from JLG. The move of the two largest manufacturers into what has, to some extent been a niche market sector in the past, is likely to have a major impact on the size of the all electric/hybrid boom lift market in the coming years. Interesting times.
