A close shave

We received news of an incident which occurred in the UK almost two weeks ago in which a large steel column landed on the operator's cab of a City type All Terrain crane.

The incident occurred at the Industrial Chemicals facility at West Thurrock in Essex, southern England.

The sling on the beam snapped, causing it to drop

We understand that the 45 tonne Liebherr LTC 1045-3.1, owned and operated by Cadman Crane Hire, had lifted, and was supporting the beam when the slings holding it snapped. The operator was alert and swift enough to get well clear of the area before the beam landed. So thankfully no one was hurt in the incident.

It could so easily have ended differently.

o
Good Afternoon Mr Editor,

Vertikal Readers may know that I stand for Worker Safety and given that HSE published figures show that 9082 have been Killed at work since Parliament first enrolled The HSW etc Act in 1974. I have no difficulty in speaking up for the Dead as they cannot speak for themselves.

Therefore as the Potentially Fatal Dropped Load depicted above is Crane Incident number 577 as recorded by me which has Killed 520 Men, Women and Children worldwide since I started Crane Safety research on 070507. I have now been requested to share my research with all others with an Interest in Crane Safety.

This illustrated Presentation will explain...

Why and what went wrong in each of these 577 Crane Incidents ?
Why we can all learn from these to avoid repeating those same Crane incidents ?
Why Physics, Crane Safety Training and creating a Culture of Safety is so important in raising standards to avoid Fatal Incidents in Construction Industry ?

The venue is The King Malcolm Hotel in Dunfermline, Fife on Wed 200319.
and
The Cardiff and Vale College City Campus in Dumballs Rd, Cardiff on Thu 040419.

All Chief Executives, Directors, Managers and Operators are formally invited to attend as my personal guests.

Because Worker Safety is important, very important and much too important to leave it to chance ?

Kind Regards
Mike Ponsonby
