In its first year or so of operation the fledgling plant employed 87, initially building the 30 tonne AUK 40T-60 three axle truck crane, which sported a four section 24 metre boom. It was the company’s best selling crane in those early years, with 79 of them delivered between 1969 and 1972.

Annual crane production at Ehingen is now closer to 1,800 units, and the most popular crane has been the two axle 30 tonne LTM 1030-2.1, of which 2,500 have been sold so far. The business now employs around 3,600 and builds 40 different models, designed by a team of 300 engineers. Over the years more 30,000 cranes have been delivered by Ehingen.

Ehingen’s managing director sales Christoph Kleiner said: “One of our US customers paid us the compliment once saying: ‘Liebherr is always happy to listen closely and then develop.’ Developing customer relationships is definitely one of our strengths. 90 percent of all the cranes built by us are still in use.”

Managing director administration Mario Trunzer added: “50 years of Liebherr in Ehingen are first and foremost 50 years of the commitment, willingness to perform and loyalty of our staff. Without their dedication and their ideas, we would not have been able to develop so successfully. We would like to express our sincere thanks to them all.”

A major employee anniversary celebration is planned at Ehingen this summer.
