Mobile harbour crane overturn

A mobile harbour crane overturned in the port of Marseille on Friday, while carrying out its annual overload test.

The crane overturned while carrying out its overload test

The crane, a Fantuzzi Reggiane MHC 20, was lifting water weights as part of its test programme when it simply overturned, we understand from a witness that the weight bags were being topped up with water when the incident occurred, although we have been unable to categorically confirm this. We do know that the operator and another man were in the chassis cab when the crane started to tip, and had sufficient time to jump clear and were unhurt, no one else was affected.

A closer look, the operators were in the lower cab and managed to escape unhurt

The crane mast came down onto a trailer attached to a port tractor, while the test weights ended up in the water.

That is an excellent Post.
When a load test is performed with a crane, the load must remain lifted no more than 30 or 40 centimeters from the ground.
In that way, if the crane does not support the weight, when the load touches the ground the crane has not completely lost its stability, yet.
Several crane operators and maintenance personnel have had serious accidents around the world due to not respecting this simple rule during load tests.

My belief is that the European Crane FEM Group argued against Crane overload in 2011 with this document. Load test, YES. Overload Test, NO.

Kalto
Tip side outriggers are not fully extended. Is this from the weight of the crane during the incident? or not setup properly?

A crane turns over while being purposely overloaded.

Imagine that.

Maybe testing procedures need to be re-examined.
