Large crawler crane incident

A large lattice crawler crane has overturned this evening near Arcisate Varese in Northern Italy.

The crane - owned by Vernazza - rigged with a back mast and suspended superlift counterweight was lifting a large section of a new viaduct at the Arcisate Stabio railway yards, near Varese when it appeared that the rear of the tracks came off the ground. After seeming to be on the point of balance for a while it finally lost stability and overturned dumping its load.

The scene just after the dust had settled


We understand that the operator managed to jump clear as the crane went over and is uninjured and that no one else was caught up in the incident. If so then this is extremely fortunate. We will update this article when more news is available in the meantime:

L’incidente è avvenuto nel tardo pomeriggio di ieri. Questa mattina i tecnici hanno effettuato un sopralluogo per valutare tempi di rimozione del mezzo e la ripresa dei lavori

Tragedia sfiorata ieri pomeriggio nel cantiere dell’Arcisate-Stabio: una gru è crollata, ribaltandosi, mentre gli operai erano al lavoro vicino al viadotto della Bevera. Fortunatamente non si sono registrati feriti, e anche l’operatore della gru si è salvato riuscendo ad uscire dal mezzo in tempo. Questa mattina il sopralluogo dei tecnici per valutare quanto accaduto, i tempi di rimozione del mezzo pesante e quelli di ripresa dei lavori per il completamente del tratto ferroviario
