New seven metre Bobcat

Bobcat has launched a new more compact three tonne/seven metre telehander, the TL30.70.

While making the new model more compact, the company claims that lift performance has not been compromised, with maximum forward reach a respectable four metres, at which it can handle a tonne, while taking two tonnes to the maximum lift height of 5.67 metres. The U shaped high-tensile steel boom features an integrated boom head and large new generation wear pads.

The new machine is available with a choice of two overall stowed heights with a cab that can be mounted in a low position, to provide an overall height of 2.1 metres, or in the higher position to optimise visibility. The cab is also suspended to enhance ride comfort. Overall width is 2.1 metres, overall length just over 4.5 metres with a total weight of 5,320kg.

A choice of two diesels are available, a 100hp Stage IV Bobcat with DEF injection after treatment technology, or a more fuel efficient 75hp Perkins Stage IIIB that does not require emission after treatment systems. Both engines are matched to the Bobcat auto shift hydrostatic transmission with inching function. An automatic fan inverter, can be set to periodically clean radiators and air intake grill to maintain efficient cooling.

In the cab the new telehandler features standard all-in-one ergonomic joystick controls with boom Cushion Retract that automatically slows down the boom speed when the boom is nearly fully retracted or as it approaches the maximum or minimum boom angles, an automatic parking brake and air suspension seat, including longitudinal and low frequency suspensions, with a high level of adjustment to allow the operator to find the most comfortable driving position.

Vertikal Comment

This looks like a decent new addition to the Bobcat line-up, with an excellent standard specification and a number of attractive features. The challenge as always will be distribution and competing with companies like JCB, Manitou and Merlo, among others that have a higher profile in the telehandler market and which are clearly more ‘invested’ in the market.

Having said this, the company has its followers and the Bobcat brand is well established and widely respected, but more for skid steer loaders and even mini excavators than for telehandlers. Unless this changes it is hard to see how it might substantially increases its market share, even though its latest products are first class.
