Liebherr boosts 750 tonne lattice booms

Liebherr has increased the length and capacity on the SX boom systems for the 750 tonne LR 1750/2 crawler crane and LG 1750 lattice-boomed truck crane.

The SX system, with its 3.5 metre wide lattice boom sections, can be extended and strengthened with the new SX2 and SX3 kits, which comprise two or three 14 metre long by six metre wide sections fitted directly to the boom base or butt section. Significantly improving long boom capacities sufficient to install wind turbine components weighing up to 127 tonnes to a height of 166 metres, with many capacities improved by up 30 percent. The six metre wide SX sections fold down to an overall width of 3.5 metres for transport.

German crane rental company Hüffermann Krandienst has taken delivery of one of the first LR 1750/2 crawler cranes with the SX2 system. The crane's first job was at Siggelkow Wind Farm in Mecklenburg Western Pomerania, northern Germany where it erected three Enercon type E-101 wind turbines with a hub height of 135 metres.

The crane also includes a VarioTray ballast system, which consists of a removable ballast frame for the derrick boom that is unbolted from the suspended ballast frame and can be used separately with up to 125 tonnes of counterweight.

Hüffermann managing director Daniel Janssen said: "It is important that we have the right equipment to be ready for future business opportunities such as wind energy. We now believe that we have reached that position with the SX2 boom system which enables us to achieve the performance of 1000-tonne class cranes."

Heiner Kluck of Hüffermann added: "We only need 110 tonnes of VarioTray ballast for hoisting the generator with a gross weight of 92 tonnes, the heaviest part of the system. The crane is fantastic to control and also very sensitive and precise. I'm very satisfied with it."
