71 Liebherrs for German Army

17. July 2017 | Comments (0)

The German army has ordered 33 four axle 20 tonne recovery cranes and 38 modified 90 tonne All Terrain cranes.

The 71 crane order, worth €150 million includes 33 G-BKF recovery cranes, mounted on a four axle All Terrain chassis with 20.9 metre main boom, dual recovery winches and a towing device at the rear. The four axle G-LTM 1090-4.2 is derived from the standard LTM 1090-4.2 but with armoured crane and carrier cabs and 35.7 metre main booms. 17 of the G-LTM 1090-4.2s have been ordered with 8.4 tonnes of counterweight and 21 units with 22.5 tonnes. All are fitted with recovery winches at the rear, whilst the order also includes container systems for transporting crane equipment. The deliveries are due to start in the second half of 2018 and will be completed by 2021.

Protecting the operators was a critical requirement so Liebherr worked with Rheinmetall, the leading European supplier of military equipment, on the armoured cabs. The chassis cabs are designed to protect the crew from ballistic, mine and IED threats and also feature an NBC ventilation system. The superstructure cabs protect the operators from ballistic threats during crane operations. The cabs are common to all 71 cranes.
