German optimism at Terex Cranes

Terex Cranes has reached a positive agreement with the works council and union IG Metal in regards to restructuring its German production facilities, as order intake has improved.

When the company announced substantial restructuring plans in December it anticipated between 300 and 500 job losses in the Zweibrücken area as the Bierbach plant was closed and Dinglerstraße- Zweibrücken offices transferred to Wallerscheid.

The situation now looks a great deal more optimistic. The Bierbach facility has been sold to Trier based Steil Kranarbeiten, although part if it will be rented back for test and inspection work with employees from these areas remaining on site. A further 150 employees involved with steel fabrication, along with the repair and spare parts centre will gradually be transferred to Zweibrücken by September 2018 with the balance being offered places by the sites new owners.

Terex has already reached a ‘future proof’ agreement with the works council and union, which aims to secure the long term future of the Zweibrücken plant, with no redundancies due to internal restructuring before 2021 and a guarantee of no job losses before 2019 regardless of order intake. In exchange the Works Council and union have agreed a flexibility plan that adjusts hours and staffing to demand. The company will also invest €25 million in the plant and train at least 32 new staff each year.

Terex is also a great deal more optimistic, as order intake for German built All Terrains has picked up Site manager Klaus Beulker said: "This encouraging development is due in part to the successful reintroduction of our traditional brand, Demag, also our efforts to increase productivity and quality, have been implemented together with our workforce in recent years. "
