Crane fatality in Dallas

A man died yesterday, while another was injured after a truck crane overturned in downtown Dallas, Texas.

The man who died was working on the ground, possibly as a rigger/slinger, and was crushed by the falling boom.

The overturned crane

The crane, a National Crane NBT 40 on a five axle commercial chassis, looks relatively news and was working with a retracted main boom, with outriggers down, but inboard/short rigged.
The crane operator was apparently not hurt in the incident, while the injured man was also working below and is not thought to have life threatening injuries.

When are these so called "operators" going to realize that no good ever comes from working a crane, particularly a large boom truck, on fully retracted outriggers. An innocent man has perished, an operator is emotionally scarred for life, and a family has needlessly lost a member. And worse of all, these incidents continue to happen.
