Tree too heavy for crane

A boom truck/crane overturned in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday after lifting a tree section that proved to be too heavy.

The crane boom came down on the house which was occupied at the time, thankfully no was hurt or injured in the incident. Local company Al’s Tree Service was removing the tree from the backyard of a home when the operator decided to lift a section that was clearly too heavy for the boom length and radius he was working at. We understand that the crane was rented in for the job.

The boom destroyed the living room of the home and did some minor damage to a house behind. Homeowner Fay Aleria speaking to a local TV station said: “The tree service workers told the crane operator not to grab such a big portion of the tree, but they did it anyway. Seconds later, the crane plowed into my home and the truck tipped upright. I'm just glad nobody was inside and nobody got hurt,” Aleria said. “I'm glad the crane operator didn't get hurt. I guess he jumped off.”

Not a load chart issue for sure...this happens all the time in the US. Manufacturers try to make cranes idiot proof and they just keep making better idiots!

Are the load charts for cranes in America that little bit more generous than ones in Europe / UK ?

Could that make drivers just that little but more overconfident when it comes to large, suddenly applied loads to cranes and leave just that little less margin for safety ?

There's got to be some common denominator here surely ?
