250t for Faroe Islands

Faroese construction company ArtiCon has taken delivery of a 250 tonne Grove GMK5250L All Terrain crane.

The five axle GMK5250L features a 70 metre, seven section main boom along with a 21 metre luffing bi-fold swingaway extension which features two additional lattice extension sections, which takes it to 37 metres and provides a 110 metre maximum tip height. The crane was delivered to ArtiCon by Faroe Islands distributor UN Mobilkraner.

The crane is currently constructing a new fish farm for salmon producer Bakkafrost. When the job is complete, it will move on to the construction of a new power plant for SEV, the public energy company for the Faroe Islands.

Grove GMK5250L

Articon manager Jón Sigurdsson said: “We already had a 75 tonne Rough Terrain crane, but we needed a crane with more capacity. The new Grove GMK5250L has enough capacity for our applications, and meets other demands, such as navigating the terrain here on the Faroe Islands where we have many steep hills. This new crane is extremely mobile and easy to manoeuvre. The cooperation with UN Mobilkraner has worked really well. We feel that they have made an effort to meet our requirements and needs. Amongst others, they have tailored a maintenance agreement for us, which means that in the end, the distance between Denmark and the Faroe Islands is not a barrier for a good working relationship.”

Crane operator Johnny Thomassen added: “After the crane was delivered from the factory in Germany, I spent a week in Denmark, where the technicians at UN Mobilkraner instructed me in handling the crane and its features. This has been an amazing experience, and I really felt ‘dressed for the occasion’ when I returned to the Faroe Islands.”
