500 tonner overturn

Reports are coming in of a 500 tonne crane belonging to the Sarens Nass joint venture overturning on Friday in Qatar while being rigged.

The reports from a reliable source claim that the operator only extended the outriggers on one side and then slewed around to pick up the counterweight and the crane went over. The crane is relatively new joining the fleet just a couple of years ago.

The crane was short rigged

No other details have arisen yet but we understand that no one was seriously hurt in the incident. We will update when we hear more.

Good Morning Mr Sparrow,

‘Res Ipsa Loquitur’ ( Latin) means in English that “ The Thing Speaks For Itself,” : So as the Short Rigged Crane above is the second large capacity Mobile Crane to Tip over in 24hrs and the third in 3 months : It would appear to be indicative of a much deeper seated problem. That is the lack of Training, particularly in the Laws of Physics. Because raising the Boom with some or all of the Outriggers Retracted, or short rigged, is attempting to Defeat Gravity.

This dangerous practice has Killed many Men over the years and it is very noticeable that no-one in the Crane Industry speaks up for the dead, so I will. Moreover my 10 yrs of Research into Crane Incidents Worldwide now confirms that…………….

1. Four Hundred and Five (405) Crane and Lifting Related Fatal Incidents Worldwide, including 32 in the UK alone since 1st Sept 2007.

2. All arising from Three Hundred and Sixty Nine (369) seperate Crane and/or Lifting Incidents Worldwide since 1st Sept 2007.

3. With the same Negligent Crane circumstances Repeated over & over & over again. For Example Outriggers Short-rigged, or Worse Still Retracted, as in Crane Incidents above.

So in the absence of any other Crane Safety Initiatives, it is my submission to the Crane Industry that it should…..

4. Adopt ‘ Safe Systems of Work’, so that when something goes wrong it does not Lead to Death(s) or Injury(s).

5. Start a Safety Training Programme called ‘ How to Avoid Crane Incidents ’ and incorporating the Laws of Physics.

6. Invite the CEO and all others invited to attend, because if he or she is not committed to Crane Safety, No-one else will be.

As my Spreadsheet recording 10 years of Research into Crane Safety now confirms that 405 Men, Women and Children have now been Killed Worldwide in 369 seperate Cranes and Lifting Incidents since 1st September 2007.

Because Worker Safety is very important ?

With Kindest Regards.
