Fatal lifting

A man was killed last night in the town of Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland, apparently after a sling slipped from a load - which we now know to be a lamp post - being lifted by an excavator.

According to a caller to our offices, the man, 38, was passing by the work site, when a load being lifted by a wheeled excavator slipped out of the slings. We have managed to confirm that a man did indeed die last night from a construction related incident in the town, but some reports indicate that he was working on project, installing lamp posts. Warrenpoint is on the border with the republic of Ireland.

In a statement the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland (HSENI) said: “The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has been advised this morning of the death of a man involved in construction work at a site in the Warrenpoint area. Inspectors from HSENI attended the scene immediately and investigations into the incident are ongoing. Our sympathies and thoughts are with the bereaved family at this very difficult time.”
