Two Terex's for Chile

Terex has delivered two new diesel-electric Terex Gottwald G HMK 8410 mobile harbour cranes to customers in Chile.

The first unit went to Terminal Puerto Arica in the far north of Chile, while an identical G HMK 8410 crane has shipped to Compania Portuaria Mejillones in Puerto Angamos, around 500km further south and will go into service during the fourth quarter. The maritime logistics group Ultramar has a share in both the Arica and Mejillones terminals.

The 10 axle G HMK 8410 has a maximum capacity of 100 tonnes, can manage loads up to a radius of 58 metres and boast a maximum lift speed of 90 metres a minute. It also has a high tower, providing an operator eye view of almost 38 metres high. The cranes are able to load and unload vessels of up 19 container rows.

The G HMK 8410 is the third Terex crane for Arica, and follows two HMK 300E mobile harbour cranes delivered in 2006.

Arica Terminal’s general manager Diego Bulnes Valdéz said: “More and more vessels with up to eight containers stacked on deck are arriving at our terminal. This new mobile harbour crane will help us serve these vessels quickly and cost-effectively.”

Terex Port Solutions has received two orders from Chilean ports for G HMK 8410 mobile harbour cranes

Mejillones has operated a G HMK 8410 since 2010, and also has an HMK 280E. The new crane will be used predominantly for container handling and will be delivered with a heavy-load twin-lift spreader for handling two six metre containers of 30 tonnes each. The crane will also work with a revolver spreader for loading cargo from the nearby mines. The revolver spreader is similar to a conventional container spreader, but it can be turned by up to 360 degrees on its longitudinal axis.

Mejillones general manager Philipp Schaale Simpendörfer said: “We are responding to our customer’s needs by adapting our terminal infrastructure and equipment to serve the new super post-Panamax vessels in an efficient and productive way. And with the range of applications provided, our terminal will particularly benefit from the flexibility of a mobile harbour crane like the G HMK 8410. It is precisely this flexibility that will extend our range and create advantages amid fierce competition. We were also impressed by the very short delivery lead time and the service concept of Terex Port Solutions."
