Terex Gottwald for Congo

International Container Terminal Services has taken delivery of the first of two new Terex Gottwald Model 5 mobile harbour cranes for its new $100 million Matadi Gateway Terminal in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The new crane was shipped fully assembled from Antwerp, aboard BBC Chartering’s heavy lift vessel Oder to the new container and general cargo terminal 148km up the Congo River. The Model 5 has a maximum capacity of 125 tonnes at a radius of up to 18 metres, and a maximum working radius of 51 metres.
Designed to serve Panamax class container ships in wind speeds of up to 120 metres a minute, the two cranes will operate with an automatic twin lift spreader 60 tonnes in twin lift and 50 tonnes in single lift.

The first of two Terex Gottwald Model 5 cranes for Matadi Gateway in the Congo prepares to unload

Tim Vancampen, chief executive of the Matadi terminal said: “This new unit is a game changer. It is the first unit of its kind in Matadi and will deliver high performance and faster vessel turnaround times. With the arrival of the second unit, we will also be able to give reliable service to larger gearless vessels.”

Matadi Gateway Terminal is a joint venture between ICTSI, the Ledya Group and SCTP and is located on the left bank of the Congo River around eight kilometres before the rapids that make further travel up the river impassable, it serves a wide area, including Kinshasa.
