The 4,300 tonne ALE AL.SK190 heavy lift crane has performed its first lifts in Turkey, at a petrochemical plant in Aliağa, Izmir province.

The highly mobile lifting machine, boasts load moment of 190,000 tonnes and a boom length of 141 metres and a working footprint of 35 by 55 metres. It has already carried out lifts in the USA, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Thailand.

In Turkey ALE and Izmir Vinc, worked in partnership with the AL.SK190 to lift a 600 tonne vacuum tower and an 800 tonne crude column - which was 80 metres high - from horizontal to vertical and then lift them over a 20 metre pipe rack, to place them both in positions. Both items were lifted at a radius of 96.13 metres.

ALE project manager Jose Angel Morquillas said: “We are now preparing for the next lifts. The ALE-designed lifting device was the perfect match for the Star Aegean Refinery Project, as it enabled huge planning optimisations with regards to civil works, piping and the installation of loadbearing structures before the arrival of the critical components. In today’s competitive market, this type of equipment is mostly being fabricated and shipped from overseas. The selected crane configuration allowed the foundations, chimney, pipe racks, substations and compressor buildings to be constructed well in advance of the arrival and installation of the heavy equipment."
