27 straddle carriers for New Jersey

New Jersey based Maher Terminals has ordered 27 Kalmar ESC350 straddle carriers for its Port Elizabeth terminal.

The ESC350 diesel-electric tier 4 final straddle carriers have a maximum capacity of 50 tonnes when lifting twin 20 foot containers, or 40 tonnes with single containers, and will be used to update and expand the company’s current fleet. The carriers will be pre-tested and fully erected at Kalmar’s facility prior to shipment, allowing shorter installation and commissioning time at the port. Deliveries are expected to be completed during the spring.

Kalmar sales manager for port cranes in North America, Richard Pope said: “Maher Terminals is a long-standing customer and we value the relationship greatly. We are honoured to be part of their development activities. When the industry is in transition driven by rapid technological, environmental and economic developments, we are committed to provide state of the art solutions.”

Maher has developed North America’s largest marine container terminal in the Port of New York and New Jersey. It has also launched a sustainable port infrastructure project to reduce environmental impact.

The order, which renews and expands its current fleet, is expected to be completed during the spring. The carriers will be pre-tested in Kalmar's testing facilities and delivered fully erected, allowing shorter installation and commissioning time.

Maher Terminals is one of the largest multi-user container terminal operators in the world.
