Unic 706 goes nuclear

UK based nuclear management contractor Magnox has taken delivery of a new Unic URW-706 spider crane from distributor GGR.

The crane has a six tonne capacity at three metres and can lift its maximum capacity to a height of 7.2 metres. An optional searcher hook and a 3.1 metre long jib give a maximum hook height of 22.7 metres.

Magnox, owned by Cavendish Fluor Partnership, is the management and operations contractor responsible for safely managing numerous nuclear sites and hydroelectric plant in the UK working for the sites’ owner, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA).

In order to get to the location to start the lifting operations the crane had to be stripped down, lowered through a hole in the floor and then rebuilt.

Project Manager, Kevin McIntyre said: “We often have to work in very tight spaces on nuclear sites; the UNIC-706 is perfect for us because of its lifting power and compact size. Having this machine in our fleet means we can work more efficiently and keep our sites running safely.”

Magnox has recently purchased a Unic URW-706 spider crane from distributor GGR.

The URW- 706s first job was at Torness Power Station, used in the decommissioning of the primary containment within the Steam Generating Heavy Water Reactor (SGHWR). Here it was put to work removing floors and working in conjunction with another crane to dismantle high-level pipe work, valves and mini platforms. In order to get to the location to start the lifting operations the crane had to be stripped down, lowered through a hole in the floor and then rebuilt.
