1,543 people gathered at a school in Northampton to break the Hi-Viz record

The record attempt was held to help raise the profile of this year’s national Road Safety, and included Balfour Beatty employees, Abbeyfield School students and staff, Balfour Beatty suppliers, A-Plant and Greenhams, members of Northamptonshire Police, and students and staff from Queen Eleanor primary school.

As well as the record breaking event, Balfour Beatty hosted presentations on the importance of road safety and organised a road safety signage competition for students, with the winning signs to be used on Balfour Beatty sites. The record attempt was also held in memory of 13 year old Sophie Bywaters, an Abbeyfield School student who was tragically killed crossing the road whilst returning from a Youth Club in 2009.

What a striking example of the ineffectiveness of over-used Hi-vis.

I was on a UK job site a few months back, and noted how much the 3 guys who were not wearing hi-vis stood out ! On a site where all people, machines and barriers are all reflective hi-vis, everything becomes one big blur of shiny stuff wrapped in yellow.
Common sense gone awry
