Configured with a 55 metre boom, the LHM 550 has a boom fulcrum height of 22 metre allowing post-Panamax-sized container vessels to be easily serviced. A capacity of up to 1500 tonnes or 38 cycles per hour is achievable in this configuration. The LHM 550 maximum hook height is 45 metres above the quay, descending to 15 metres below combined with a variable rope speed of up to 120 metres per minute.

Due to the variety of cargo the crane has been specified with an air overpressure system allowing air to be drawn in through the top of the tower before being forced into the slewing platform to prevent dust infiltration. It has also been fitted with an option to reduce the width of its supporting base enabling it to work on narrower sections of quay. When operating in the reduced width option, the crane’s control system automatically reduces its maximum safe working load. Double supporting pads have been fitted to reduce the load transmitted through to the quayside.

The LHM 550 has also been supplied with a powered rotating hook block, a 20 cu metre Verstegen mechanical grab and Liebherr’s Lidat system which logs operational data and allows remote monitoring.
