Fatal tower crane collapse in Vietnam

A tower crane collapsed into a busy street in Hai Phong, Vietnam, yesterday killing a man driving past the site on a motor bike.
Le Quang Bay, 49, died instantly, while two female pedestrians - one in her 40s and one in her 60s were injured. The crane operator, Vo Ngoc Long, 42, was also seriously injured.

The crane is operated by Bach Dang 5 Construction Company which is building a new facility for the Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam on the site. The crane was only inspected and recertified three days ago by a department of the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

We have no other photographs at this stage and no details of what exactly occurred, we will update if and when we receive more information. Hai Phong, a port city in Northern Vietnam is located south east of Hanoi.

The scene shortly after the crane came down


The contractor made an immediate payment of VnD 50 million ($2,225) to the family of the dead victim as initial support, while the local government provided a further VnD10 million ($445) along with a payment of VnD3 million ($133) to each of those injured.
