Off to the South Pole

A ship carrying a LiuGong TC250-4 truck crane to China’s Zhongshan station in Antarctica, set sail last week from Shanghai.

The crane, which will arrive in two months time, is the second unit for the research facility, the first having arrived a year ago. It was loaded on board the supply vessel in a tandem lift by the ships two on board cranes.

The new truck crane, which has been modified to handle the extreme conditions, will be used primarily for loading and unloading cargo along with building and repair work at the research station. This second TC250-4 was specified only after the first had proven its ability to work reliably and continuously in the extreme, sub-zero Antarctic environment.

LiuGong signed a special equipment supply agreement with the Polar research centre of China in 2012 and since then has sent several machines, including a CLG920D excavator, CLG856 wheel loader and the TC250-4 crane.
