Six new Liebherrs for Scholpp

German crane company Scholpp Kran & Transport of Stuttgart has ordered six new Liebherr All Terrain cranes with capacities of between 70 and 350 tonnes.

The new order includes two 70 tonne four axle LTM 1070-4.2, two 100 tonne four axle LTM 1100-4.2- which have already been delivered – a five axle 130 tonne LTM 1130-5.1 and a six axle 350 tonne LTM 1350-6.1. All the cranes have been ordered with Liebherr’s VarioBase outrigger system.

The LTM 1100-4.2, which feature 60 metre main booms were ordered with work in the chemicals industry and refineries in mind, as well as erecting mobile phone masts and tower cranes.

One of the LTM 1100-4.2 went straight to work in a high Alpine area in the Allgäu Alps erecting a mobile phone mast for BOS-Technik in Balderschwang. BOS-Funk is a non-public FM mobile phone service used by public authorities and security organisations. The crane had to climb steep gravel tracks to an altitude of 1,500 metres, negotiating tight bends on the way.

The crane had to lift up to 8.7 tonnes at 19 metres radius

Space was limited so the crane set up with the two front outrigger beams half extended, with the rear ones fully out. With its full 60 metres of boom extended, the crane lifted 8.7 tonnes to a radius of 19 metres over one of the front jacks, with a hook height of over 56 metres and then slewed it over the rear to place it.

Martin Scholpp said: "The VarioBase was a factor in our decision, it not only enhances safety but also makes the cranes much more flexible to use. When you inspect a construction site one day and the crane arrives there the next day, things often look completely different. The Variable Supporting Base enables us to react flexibly to changed conditions and work with optimised load capacities where space is at a premium."

Limited space restricted the front outrigger spread, but the crane's Variobase system calculated a load chart to match

Scholpp, which celebrates its 60th anniversary next year, covers the Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Heilbronn, Böblingen and Ludwigshafen areas with a fleet of 70 cranes up to 500 tonnes, with mini-cranes and tower cranes. The company employs 110 and is currently training 12 new crane operators through its in-house training department.

"Limited space restricted the front outrigger spread" I wouldn't be comfortable with the front mats being so close to the rather steep looking bank!
