Self-erector tips

A self-erecting tower crane overturned onto the building that it had been working on in Ingolstadt, Germany, on Friday.

We understand that the crane was in the process of being removed, retracted in preparation for removal from site when the incident occurred. It looks as though the outriggers facing the building were retracted but looking at the photograph we have been sent, it looks as though some of the counterweight had been removed while the jib was still out.

Thankfully no one was injured in the incident and the damages seems light.

This type of crane has a large warning notice and a large drawing on the base of it.
This shows you must only remove the last ballast blocks by using the self ballasting device.
When using the correct system the tower leans back about 20 degrees and that keeps the crane stable.
The outriggers would have folded in afterwards as the bracing is not designed to take the weight of the crane
