Crane suicide

A young soldier managed to gain access to a construction site in Castres, South West France on Monday morning, when he climbed one of the two tower cranes on site and threw himself from the jib.

The man, 26, is reported to have died immediately on impact, the emergency services arrived soon after his jump, when he was spotted around 7:00 am walking along the jib by pedestrians. The job site was closed off and remained closed while an investigation continued.

Vertikal Comment

In recent years tower crane security has become a major issue, while best practice guides have stressed the need to secure cranes from unauthorised access, it remains a challenge to prevent the determined.

In recent weeks there have been several arrests – some of them prominent – of people climbing cranes for a stunt or publicity. It remains an area that needs the attention of manufacturers and rental companies and contractors to find a cost effective solution that works.

Grumpy
Poor bloke.
Such a sad loss of life.
If a person is troubled to this degree he will find any way to end it all and I'm sure he'd have found another way if he'd been prevented from climbing the tower crane.
