Big order for Modulift

Oil and gas specialist Alderley has taken delivery of 27 Modulift spreader beams for the Shah Deniz Stage 2 BP project in Azerbaijan. The order is also one of the largest Modulift has received from the oil and gas sector.

The spreader beams, which can lift up to 100 tonne, range in spans of 1.5 to 10 metres and will be used for the transport and installation of gas metering systems, manufactured at Alderley’s facility in Gloucestershire, UK. The largest system measures 40 metres long, 14.7 metres wide and 9.3 metres high. Weighing 420 tonnes, it will be broken into seven skids for shipping.

Anthony Culshaw, Modulift senior design engineer, said: “Alderley passed on the Shah Deniz Stage 2 project specifications originally provided by BP, which included material certification 3.1, test procedures, non-destructive testing procedures, proof load testing to twice the safe load, rig drawings, and much more.”

“This sort of order is perfect for us because Alderley came to us at such an early stage. We had the chance to visit their site and see the equipment whilst it was still in fabrication. This is vital as it can give us an insight into any potential problems or extra requirements for the lifts. Due to this early involvement we were able to design the lifting rigs from the ground up which is better for both us and the customer as timescale and budget can be reduced.”

Located approximately 90km offshore in the Azerbaijan sector of the South Caspian Sea, is one of the largest gas developments in the world
