New 1.5 x 1.5 polythene mats
The Outriggerpads division of IAPS in the UK, has launched a new 200 tonne capacity outrigger spreader plate for mobile cranes and other heavy equipment.
The new standard production 1.5 x 1.5 metre by 100mm mat is manufactured from high density polyethylene (HDPE), making it highly durable. The material is resistant to water, oil and chemicals - and unlike metal or wooden spreader plates, there is no risk of corrosion or splintering. Outriggerpads claims to be the first company in the UK to stock polyethylene mats of this size.
The new spreader plates weigh 214kg each and incorporate four steel lifting bars for lifting, they are lighter than the equivalent sized steel pads, but are said to have a greater load bearing capability.

Charles Grizzle, business development executive at Outriggerpads said: “Initially we only produced 1.5 metre pads on request as a special order, which enabled us to test the market. The same sized steel mat is more than double the weight, yet has a much lower load capacity compared to our 200 tonnes. Ultimately the steel pads are difficult to handle and store due to their sheer size and weight”.
“Demand has quickly grown as crane operators recognise the benefits of using our lighter and more durable spreader plates. We are now moving into full production of these pads to ensure delivery times are kept to a minimum”.

Good question.
Also its what a mat does with the load that is key.
It is possible that this mat would take 200 tonnes...in compression directly beneath the crane foot. Distribution of the load towards the outer reaches of the plate would be inferior to a fabricated steel mat or modular aluminium system. This is why temporary works engineers specify steel / aluminium systems for larger load spread areas.
I believe Cranes & Access are featuring outrigger pads again later this year. This would be an interesting topic for an article.

Sorry i may have missed something, the 200t capacity ? Is that a 200t crane or can it reduce a 200t point load ?
