The pallet, forklift and ladder

Spotted by a reader in the UK, a method of working at height in a workshop that should have vanished years ago.

The transport company or workshop owner in the English Midlands seems oblivious to the fact that this form of access is not only wrong, but damn right dangerous. Numerous deaths and serious injuries arise every year from falls from such bodged up access platforms.

If avoiding such incidents is not enough of an incentive, then the fact that it is inefficient and sends a message to employees that ‘bodging’ is good or at least OK, should convince the tightest ‘make do merchant’. It is hardly a message that encourages the sort of excellence among employees that is required to succeed in today’s ever competitive world.

Perhaps those selling powered access or mobile towers/stands are not spreading the message well enough? There is still work to be done - even in the most developed of markets - to convince companies that purpose built access equipment is not only safer, but more efficient. This is a company that would benefit greatly from a sales call.

A definite one for our Death Wish series

There is bound to come a time when this method of WAH is outlawed and subject to penalties. The time may be sooner than we think. To work this way is so contrary to common sense. Common sense comes from common knowledge.

Its only wrong for those who envisage the worst case scenario and cannot plan with risk involved in the task at hand.
