Hird adds Maeda spider cranes

UK-based crane and access sales & rental company Hird has expanded its spider crane and glass lifting fleets with the addition of new five Maeda cranes and a specially-designed vacuum lifter.

The order comprises of four 2.8 tonne Maeda MC285-2s and a 3.8 tonne MC 405. Features include an 850kg searcher hook for the MC285, and a fly jib for the MC405 which extends its working radius up to 16 metres. The company now has a fleet of 24 spider cranes, which it claims is one of the largest fleets in the UK.

Hird has also worked with German manufacturer Kappel to co-design its new in-line fin lifter which can be extended to nine metres in length and has a maximum capacity of 1,800kg. It has 210 degrees lockable rotation and has remote tilting from vertical to horizontal positions. For additional safety it has new four circuit technology, with four vacuum reserve tanks and four non-return valves.

Hird has expanded its mini crane fleet with the addition of new five Maeda mini cranes

Hird managing director Phil Hird said: “This significant investment is driven by healthy demand from our clients and innovative ideas being generated by Hird. Clients are wanting more precise lifting solutions for technically challenging tasks, especially in the construction industry, and we aim to keep up with that demand. Mini cranes are increasingly coming into their own for lifting solutions that require flexibility and operation in confined areas, especially where working height is limited.”

The new Kappel Fin Lifter

“Our aim is to satisfy all glass lifting requirements," he added. "As construction methods become more sophisticated and glass becomes a more integral part of building structures, specialist vacuum lifters are needed for particular roles. Our new fin lifter is one such machine.”

Just to clarify, the Fly jib on the Maeda MC405 does not extend its working radius it increases its maximum tipping height from 16.8 meters to 20.7 meters @ 520kgs max lifting capacity.
The fly jib is programmed into the the SLI / Moment limiter and operates between boom angles of 55 to 72 degrees.
