New 250t Grove AT

Grove has launched its GMK5250L, a new single engine 250 tonne five axle All Terrain crane, which the company claims has the strongest reach and load chart of any five-axle crane.

The new crane features a 70 metre, seven section main boom and a 12 to 21 metre hydraulic bi-fold swingaway, which can offset from five to 50 degrees. The swingaway can be extended further with two eight metre inserts for a total of 37 metres, giving a maximum tip height of 110 metres. An optional integrated heavy duty jib is also available.

Powered by a single Tier IV final/Euromot 4 engine, the crane features a new VIAB turbo clutch and integrated retarder which the company claims is the first mobile crane to feature the system. The VIAB turbo clutch module eliminates both fluid overheating and clutch burning, while enabling wear-free starting and braking. It is also said to provide up to 30 percent savings in fuel compared to its predecessor.

A newly designed superstructure cab, with new jog dial and joystick controllers, also features the company’s Crane Control System and Boom Configuration Mode, which allows the operator to input the lift parameters – radius, load and distance to be moved – before it calculates the best boom configuration and automatically extends to the required length.

Grove claims its new 250 tonne GMK5250L has the strongest reach and load chart of any five-axle crane

Lighter than the GMK5220, the crane’s 12 tonne axle loadings and configuration are said to make it easier to move in countries with stricter axle loading requirements, such as the USA, Canada, Norway, Australia and Japan. In countries where axle loadings can be higher, such as the UK (16.5 tonnes) the crane is able to travel with up to 21 tonnes of counterweight.
On site, it can be moved with its full 80 tonnes of counterweight in place. An optional self-rigging auxiliary hoist is available too, which eliminates the need for an assist crane.

Other features include all-wheel steering, Megatrak independent suspension and its Man Machine Interface (MMI) system - already featured on the GMK6300L and GMK6400 - which allows the suspension to be controlled even while in a locked position.

Jens Ennen, Manitowoc senior vice president All Terrain and truck cranes, said: “This new Grove is packed with innovations that we will also be extending to other new cranes, adding them as standard and giving our customers even more value. Design features from us that first raised the bar in All Terrain innovation are now becoming our standard. We are continuing to work with the latest technology and this will keep us at the forefront of mobile crane efficiency and design.”

“Customer return on investment has been the key driver in the development of this ground-breaking machine. To create a highly versatile crane that is suited to job sites around the world, it was important for us to focus on specifications and load-charts. Customers can expect high utilisation rates with this crane too, as we anticipate excellent reliability. We are expecting the GMK5250L to continue the success of other Grove introductions of recent years, such as the GMK6300L which is one of the most popular Grove All Terrain cranes of all time.”
