Terex to close overhead crane plant

Terex has announced the closure of its Demag overhead crane plant in Luisenthal, Germany by the end of next year.

Production will be transferred to its plant in Slany, in the Czech Republic - north west of Prague - where it not only has excess capacity, but where labour and other costs are significantly lower. The move will affect 100 jobs in the German plant - which is located to the south of Erfurt - 90 of them permanent and 10 temporary.

The move follows the recent closure of the facility in Houston, following the shift of production to the upgraded plant in Oklahoma - see: Terex shifts Demag production. The company said that the move will take the Slany plant up to around 80 percent of capacity and will not only reduce costs, but also improve delivery times and reliability.

Terex has offered to help employees at the Luisenthal plant find jobs at other Terex locations in Germany.
