High altitude Liebherr LTR1220

Liebherr has delivered the first LTR1220 in South America to a Peruvian copper mine 5,000 metres above sea level in the Andes mountains.

The 220 tonne telescopic crawler crane was sold to Gruas Alquileres earlier this year and has gone out on a long term rental, working in a large copper and zinc mine owned by Joy Global Peru, where it is performing well and coping perfectly with the altitude and extreme temperature fluctuations

The Liebherr LTR1220 working 5,000 metres up in the Andes

The crane is used for unloading and assembling the components of two large electric mining excavators, covering challenging ground conditions to do the work. The crane’s short setup times, manoeuvrability and ability to travel with full load are all significant assets for the application.

The Antamina mine complex predominantly produces copper, zinc and molybdenum ore it is one of the 10 largest in the world with 24 hour seven days a week operations all year round with around 430,000 tonnes of material extracted every day.
