Unic trains the armed forces

Unic Cranes Europe has provided spider crane training for UK and Danish military servicemen in order to carry out helicopter maintenance and repair work.

Unic Cranes Europe instructor Adrian Richards trained three Royal Danish Air Force servicemen based at the helicopter wing of the Karup military base in Denmark. Spread over three days the delegates were trained to use a six tonne URW-706 spider crane which was originally sold to NATO before eventually being passed on to the Royal Danish Air Force.

Robert Ballantyne, another of GGR’s trainers, travelled to RAF Odiham in Hampshire, UK to carry out an assessment on a serviceman working towards a NVQ Level 2 qualification. In 2012 the ministry of defence invested in a fleet of Unic URW-376s – Spider cranes join the army – and since then 20 troops from RAF Odiham have taken part in the accredited CPCS A66 compact crane training course.

UNIC Cranes Europe chief executive Graeme Riley, said: “We provide our customers with this industry approved training as we want to increase awareness of how important it is to follow health and safety procedures when using these compact cranes. People shouldn’t be mistaken in thinking that because these mini cranes are small and user-friendly that they could not become dangerous if used incorrectly, as with any construction plant equipment.”
