Another crane fire

A three axle city type All Terrain crane caught fire on the M-25 London orbital motorway this morning delaying rush hour traffic.

The incident occured between junctions 9 and 10 in the clockwise direction. The road was reopened once fire crews had extinguished the fire a couple of hours after it started. No one was hurt in the incident.

The fire under control

The fire crew stated that they are called out on very few vehicle fires these days, most calls are for overheated vehicles that do not actually catch fire.

Vertikal Comment

All Terrain cranes are highly prone to fires, compared to other commercial vehicles clearly they are more complex than trucks, but perhaps this is an area that manufacturers need to look at?

Doesn't mater what you think they are like off road the fact is they are advertised as a all terrain crane "city class" by Demag.

The fact of the matter is anybody who has run the demag city cranes clearly knows that if you try and take these cranes off road you will find out they are not all terrain.

Jimmy
Surely the main point here is that nobody was hurt in the incident and the driver was ok.

it's an AC40-1 , the AC series of cranes were all terrain cranes (the HC series were truck mounts)the all terrain label was largely academic as anyone with any real experience with taking them 'off' road will fully understand!

tris , they did make a 4 axle 60t city crane which was later uprated to 70t , it also had a weird off settable top tele section.

paul, try being nice unless your facts are 100% ?

as for all terrains catching fire , I dealt with a few when I worked as a service engineer for demag and most (not all) of the time they could be traced to lack of maintenance or poor repair standards (often due to pressure on the companys engineers to keep the crane working at all costs)

whilst cranes have moved on in leaps and bounds technology wise , sadly crane companys by and large don't invest in their service teams (there are some exceptions) because of short sighted/old fashioned views that the service team is cost not profit.

Looks like a GS1930 to me??

Typo. Of course. This is an AC40 which clearly is not allocated as an all terrain crane on Emerson crane hire web page.

Typo 40 ton city class.

Paul jones I think you need to get your facts strait before gobbing off, it's a Demag 60ton all terrain "City Class"

This is a city crane not an all terrain if you are going to comment you should really make sure the facts are correct
