Gemini for 1 Up

UK based rental company 1 Up Access has taken delivery of a 20 metre RAM Gemini 20.35 PTJ truck mounted lift from local distributor HLS.

Mounted on a 3.5 tonne Nissan Cabstar chassis the Gemini 20.35 has a double sigma type riser, telescopic boom and articulating jib, offering an outreach of 11 metres with a 200kg platform capacity. The boom can also be raised to 14 metres without needing to deploy its outriggers, as long as the superstructure remains centred.

1 Up managing director Ben James said: “We chose the Gemini because of the high quality finish and features like the flush mount basket, radio control and general outreach performance. It will offer our clients a fantastic alternative to the traditional boom hire, which needs to be delivered into the city on a truck and off-loaded before use, as having to book both delivery and collections in can be inconvenient for some job sites.”

I agree it is a problem across the industry, hence the introduction of ECWVTA to combat overweight / unsafe installations on vehicles.

Every vehicle registered after April 2013 should meet these regulations, the simple weight calculations of ECWVTA show most platforms do not.
75kg per seat + 90% fuel load + truck & platform
Whilst there may be different interpretations across Europe, it is clear from VOSA that when testing for MOT, etc there is zero tolerance.

It will be interesting to see if recently sold platforms make it through a VOSA / MOT test without reduction in seating capacity as VOSA are intimating. That would leave this platform, and most others, with 1 seat to make it road legal.

As an industry we need to provide platforms that are within the guidelines, safe to drive and practical for the hirers. Not try and outdo each other on reach and height whilst compromising everything else.

Height Lift & Shift
Hi Scott, Your point about the weight of the Gemini 20 with a full tank of fuel is a pertinent one - indeed in the 3.5tn, 20m category weight is a major issue for all manufacturers: Users want a 3.5tn chassis so that they can drive it on a standard licence, but getting to 20m with that weight limit is a challenge. The very fact that the Gemini weighs what it does including a full tank of fuel makes it a good option, albeit with a limited payload, that I am certain rental companies advise their customers of.

3,400kg with fuel but no driver, according to the manufacturer website & brochures.
I hope the hirers are clearly informed that they will be overweight with more than 1 person in the cab or just the 1 driver who is fond of pies.....!
