Crane drops jib

A luffing tower crane jib dropped on a site in Northwood, London, UK, yesterday, thankfully there were no injuries.

The incident occurred around 16:00 on a site in Maxwell Road, Northwood, managed by Clarke Design & Build. It looks as though the luffing jib hoist brake or cable gave way, allowing the jib to drop - a report from site says that it was in fact the brake on the luffing hoist, although we cannot confirm. It is the same make of crane that was involved in an almost identical incident in Wapping, London, last year - see: Tower crane drops its jib

Local reports suggest that the jib tip struck a building to the rear of the site and that a family was evacuated as a precaution.
