Fatal tower crane incident

A crane operator died after the tower crane he was operating collapsed in central Austria last Tuesday.

The operator, 58, was said to have been carrying out routine lifts on the job site in St. Georgen ob Judenburg to the north west of Graz, when the slew ring became detached from the 24 metre high tower. The superstructure fell to the ground with the jib tip landing in the road.

The slew ring broke free of the tower

The operator was cut free from his mangle cab by the emergency services and was airlifted to a hospital in Graz where he later succumbed to his injuries.
