Tower crane falls in Siberia

High winds are blamed for the collapse of a tower crane in the Novosibirsk, central Russia on Wednesday.

The contractor continued to operate the crane in spite of high winds and, according to witnesses, abnormal movement of the tower. The crane then came down on three cars parked in the street below. The crane operator was seriously injured.

The incident occurred in the criminal case has been opened after a construction crane fell on a Mercedes believed to belong to the Prosecutor General's Office in the Novosibirsk region on Wednesday, injuring the crane operator.

The incident occurred in the Oktyabrsky district of the city, with the tower crushing three parked cars, all with government license plates, including the Mercedes used by the deputy attorney general for the Siberian federal district.

A criminal case has been opened on the grounds that safety rules were violated, regarding the operation of the crane in winds that exceed safe levels.
