Crane hits school

A fruit vendor was killed, while five others, including four children, injured after a crane smashed into the wall of a girls school in Royapettah, Chennai, India yesterday.

The crane drive reportedly felt dizzy and lost control of the dated tractor crane, causing it to veer off the road, through a fruit stall running over Adi Lakshmi, 62, and into the school. The wall collapsed on four children and a staff member, Lakshmi died on the spot.

The scene after the accident


Bystanders dragged the crane driver out of his cab and began beating him, until the police arrived and sent him to hospital. He was later charged with driving without due care, causing harm to others and causing death by negligence.

The injured children were due to be released from hospital last night.
