36 straddle carriers for new terminal

German port operator Eurogate has recently taken delivery of 36 straddle carriers from Terex Port Solutions, for its newly built deep-draught container terminal in Wilhelmshaven, on the north coast of Germany.

Produced at Terex Port Solutions’ Würzburg facility in Germany, the 60 tonne SC644E diesel-electric straddle carriers are capable of lifting a container over the top of three containers while travelling up to 15mph. Additional features include an automated spreader positioning system, operator micro-steering and a system which monitors tyre pressures and oil conditions.

Guido Luini, managing director at Terex Port Solutions Würzburg, said: "We are very pleased that we were able to supply Eurogate with the Terex straddle carriers and proud to be able to make such a crucial contribution to the successful operation of this port which is unique in Germany."

The Eurogate Wilhelmshaven Port is the first deep-draught container terminal in Germany and has a natural water depth in excess of 18 metres allowing access to any sized container vessels regardless of the tides.

Eurogate was established in 1999 after Hamburg based terminal operator Eurokai joined with Bremerhaven based port logistics provider BLG Logistics. The company’s head office is now based in Bremen and it has nine terminal locations which in 2010 handled over 12.6 million TEUs.
