Fatal crane overturn

An articulated pick & carry crane overturned in Kasimedu, India yesterday crushing a slinger as it removed debris from the harbour.

M. Selvamani, 45, died at the scene, while another man received minor injuries. The 22 year old crane operator escaped unharmed from the cab and ran off and is currently the subject of a police search.

As the crane started to lift a large chunk of concrete it began to list, most likely due to not being level, Selvamani reportedly asked a colleague to climb onto the opposite side of the crane in an attempt to counter balance it.

The project was organised by the fisheries department which was removing debris from the harbour in order to make it easier for fishing boats to dock. Prior to building a new pier.

Kasimedu Fishing Harbour police have registered the incident as a death caused due to negligence.
