Boom goes over in Grand Cayman

An 80ft self-propelled boom lift overturned in George, Town Grand Cayman yesterday injuring the operator.

The man, 27, was using the lift, a Genie S-80, to mask-off the windows of the First Caribbean Bank in the town centre, prior to painting the building. It looks as though this is an older S-80 with extending axles, which were not extended when the lift went over.

The lift took out a 'telegraph pole'

The boom was fully raised with just one man in the platform, making it somewhat back-heavy and with the axles retracted it would not have taken a great deal to cause an overturn. It also looks as though it may have been driven off the kerb of the pavement/sidewalk?

The man stayed in the platform, possibly due to the wearing of a harness? And as a result survived the overturn which took out two power line poles before landing on a restaurant building across the road. No one else was involved in the incident.

The injured man was taken to hospital with head injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.

This looks as though it was an extendable axle model? with retracted axles

The lift was, we understand rented from local rental company A-1 Rentals.
