Heavy rains increase verge problems

This year’s heavy rains have brought a sharp increase in the number of incidents with crane and larger truck mounted platforms overturning as roadside verges give way.

The most recent example occurred yesterday evening on the north side of Oxford, in the UK when a three axle All Terrain crane overturned on a minor country road into the village of Woodeaton. We understand that the driver was unhurt and no one else was involved.

The overturned crane

The crane’s owner – King Lifting – and representatives of the emergency services were meeting this morning to discuss its recovery, which is likely to be tricky given the narrow space and quality of the road.

Operators of cranes are warned to be extra vigilant as many road edges and verges that would not normally cause a problem are saturated this year and as a result will not support the axle loadings.

Comments

As soon as I saw that distinctive green colour I thought only one thing " 'King Hell ! ". Good job the driver only had his pride dented, (and his cab maybe). Must be the most awful feeling when the ground just gives a little and then slowly you realise the whole crane is going to roll and there's nothing you can do to stop it and no time to stick an outrigger leg out to try and limit the damage. Hope for a safe recovery !
