Kennard was a well-known and highly respected member of the Australian rental industry. He started the business while still at school, in order to raise extra pocket money. At the age of 19 his mother insisted he take the growing business out of the home, and so at 19 he found himself in the rental business, operating as Kennards Hire and Kennard Roof Racks.

As the business grew, in spite of his inexperience he found he needed extra funds and so persuade his father to form a partnership with him two years later, in 1964 he bought his father out and was shortly joined by his brother Andy.

The business branched out into self-storage units and continued to grow as subsequent generations of the family joined the business. Kennard himself was also a highly political individual and a so called anarchistic-capitalist. He penned many articles on the subject and often spoke at public meetings on his views.
